Pope: ‘God is not afraid of new things’
VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis on Sunday beatified Pope Paul VI, calling on the church to adapt to the “changing conditions of society,” a day after bishops rejected a landmark change in its rigid stance on homosexuality and divorce. “God is not afraid of new things,” Francis pointedly said during the beatification Mass, which came after the two-week conference, or synod, of bishops ended. On Saturday, the bishops approved a final document that failed to include remarkably conciliatory language revealed a week earlier that would have welcomed the “gifts and qualities” of gay Catholics and called on pastors to “avoid any language or behavior” that could discriminate against divorced Catholics.
